Let the games begin!

Today the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics had their opening ceremonies in Brazil.

With the 2020 Olympics to follow in less than four years, I thought many Japanese people follow the olympic games.

But according to the students in my classes, it is not as popular as I had thought.

I guess people from the U.S.A. and Japan have different opinions when it comes to the world’s most famous international athletic competition.

However, my question to you is, what is your favorite Olympic Games memory?

I will give you my top 3 choices in descending order.

My Top 3 Summer Olympic Games moments!

Number 3:

I first moved to Fukuoka in 2006, after watching the 2008 Olympics, I noticed that the events that Japan televises are very different from the ones that Hawaii televises.  For example, Japan loves to show badminton and indoor volleyball while in Hawaii we can see more basketball and outdoor volleyball games.

As time went on, I become a fan of the Japanese Women’s volleyball team while living here in Japan.  And at the 2012 Olympics in London, England, they miraculously won the Bronze medal at those games.  I was very excited to see that happen.  So that is my third favorite moment.

Number 2:

In 1984, I was five years old.  I was very young and didn’t know much.  But one thing I can remember clearly was watching the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California on TV.  I wasn’t a big sports fan back then and didn’t really understand what the olympics were.  But I can just remember watching it on TV every night for 16 days with my family.  It was one of my favorite childhood memories.  Those memories are my second favorite moment from the Summer Olympic Games.

and my Number 1 favorite memory:

In the 1992 Barcelona, Spain Summer Olympics, the U.S. Men’s Basketball team sent their first ever NBA led team, known as “The Dream Team.”   This team comprised of the best players on the planet at that time.  It was the first time professional players were allowed to participate.  The Dream Team just dominated the competition.  It was a team that will never be duplicated again.  I wasn’t a big basketball fan before the team played, but ever since then, I have been a big fan of the entire sport.  For me that was my favorite memory of the Summer Olympic Games.

So how about you?  What Olympic events do you enjoy watching?
